When the reflection we show is not what we are, but what we should be.
The sea and the reflection
Some days, the sea becomes a perfect mirror. It reflects the sky, the clouds, even the movement of the sails... but never the depth. It's a true picture and, at the same time, a true illusion.
We are the same. What we let's show the world is just a reflection. And this reflection does not always coincide with what is happening in inside of ourselves, which reveals the dynamics of our motivation and adaptation.
Aristotle said : «Man is a social animal.»
We have need for others to exist, to belong, to cooperate. But this need for connection comes at a price: often, we adapt to the environment, We change our behaviour, we show a version of ourselves that better corresponds to the needs of our society. expectations of the world.
Motivation as fuel for adaptation
Our motivations are like internal engines that feed our adaptability. They explain our natural style, the way we act when we are aligned with who we really are.
But life often asks us to adjust. New functions, new teams, new corporate cultures... all of this requires a new approach. effort to adapt. This is where the style adapted, This is the attitude we adopt when the environment demands more of us than our nature would spontaneously give.
This effort is legitimate, sometimes necessary, but it consumes energy. And the further the adapted style moves away from the natural style, the more energy it requires. domestic fuel. When this fuel - our motivations - The body and mind are sounding the alarm: fatigue, frustration, loss of meaning... sometimes to the point of collapse.
This is what happens to many people who suffer burnout or depression. They live for years in a mode of adaptation, perhaps much more assertive, rapid or competitive than their natural profile would allow.
They use a behavioural «red» to respond to their environment, The result is predictable: effort ceases to be a choice. The result is predictable: effort ceases to be a choice and becomes wear and tear.
from coordinator to facilitator
When I discovered AEC DISC method In 2010, I took an important step in my career: I became Sales Director for the first time.
At the time, my natural style had some green and blue in dominance, the coordinator Structured, loyal, methodical and patient. These colours were in perfect harmony consistency with my motivations cognitive and traditional learning, understanding, doing things well and doing them sensibly.
But the role commercial required a different kind of energy. In my adapted style, I kept the blue and green, but the yellow began to go up, bringing more dynamism, of communication and enthusiasm.
It was the reflection of a conscious adaptation The market demanded greater visibility and proximity.
My motivation aesthetics served as fuel, helping me to maintain this balance and to animate the customer relationship without betraying my nature.
Thirteen years later, The mirror has changed. I'm basically keeping the green and blue (coordinator), but my adapted style is now dominated by the green and the yellow (facilitator).
The years from management and my work as trainer and coach have transformed the way I use my colours.
Today, my yellow reflects more than lightness, empathy and connection - a fuller expression of my aesthetic and traditional motivations, now at the heart of my work with people.
The “persona” according to Jung
Carl Gustav Jung called it the persona - the mask we wear to interact with the world. A mask useful, protector, social. But if we wear it for too long, we end up confuse the reflection with the face.
La AEC DISC method allows us to see this difference: who we naturally are, and who we become in order to adapt. Not to judge, but to understanding the effort, the context, and strike a balance between authenticity and adaptation.
When the invisible becomes the compass
Le mirror of perceptions shows how the world sees us, but also how the world sees us. we shape ourselves to find our place in it. When we know our deepest motivations, we can adjust the reflection without losing your face. This is the true balance between coherence, authenticity and adaptation.
👉 What about you? What reflection do you show to the world? And to what extent does it reflect what you feel and experience inside?
